Project Overview

We designed a web application that offers comprehensive reporting on the current and historical pipeline capacity across various areas within the client's network. This application encompasses historical charts, upcoming outages, annual notifications, and integration with other internal tools.

Challenges

Working alongside the product owner, our primary task was to modernize an application initially created as a pilot project to assess customer interest. Our responsibilities included leading user interviews, gathering requirements, and transforming customer preferences into developer-ready designs. We reimagined the existing map, elevating it from a static representation of area boundaries to the central feature of the product. This enabled users to access pertinent data based on their geographical regions. Our work with charts and data also facilitated the consolidation of services, allowing the client to retire two other applications.

Design Goal

Solutions

We worked with the development team to modernize the application, introducing new navigation, screens, and informative content. The product has been favorably received during pilot phases and is presently in the development stage.

Process

  1. We conducted client interviews to gather requirements and understand how pipeline customers preferred to access outage information and the key details required for operational planning.
  2. We mapped out ideal user flows for operators seeking to comprehend pipeline status and its impact on different areas.
  3. We designed, iterated, and prototyped a low-fidelity mockup, subjecting it to evaluation by stakeholders and a selected user group to ensure acceptance and usability.
  4. Our team created high-fidelity mockups and development assets, crucial for the development team's efforts.

The Design

Central to the enhancement is an improved map that displays regions and areas related to the pipeline. Users can interact with map dots to access information about planned outages in specific locations. This interaction leads to a detailed screen providing historical data and insights into potential future outages.
